The Zahir Pajaziti memorial and the square pay tribute to one of the founding members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). The memorial was inaugurated in 2000 and occupies a central location in what used to be a green island, which if viewed from above formed the map of Kosovo. Sculpted in bronze by Muntaz Dhrami, a Tirana-based sculptor, the large-scale statue holding a weapon introduced socialist realism, a style previously not present in Kosovar sculpture.
