Sultan Mehmet Fatih Mosque

Considered one of the most beautiful Ottoman mosques built in Europe, the Fatih Sultan Mehmed Mosque is the largest in Pristina. Moreover, it is the centerpiece of the social complex of the Fatih Sultan Mehmed, which included the Fatih Hamam, that is located in the concavity beside the Mosque and a madrasah that does not stand anymore. The inscription at the entrance states 1461, the year in which the mosque was built. Right after the city fell under Ottoman control, besides the army and bureaucracy, the empire brought along architects to define aesthetics of the newly conquered territory. The mosque has a fourteen-metre diameter dome, three sets of windows, twelve hooped columns, a tall minaret and a portico all covered in ornaments that create an immersive experience of space. The structure is built from face stones including the tall and slim minaret which has been recently restored. The mosque serves the Muslim congregation of the city to this day.
