The Clock Tower

Located at the heart of the old town, the Clock Tower reaches the height of twenty-six metres. The tower was built in the end of the 19th century during Yasar Pasha’s rule, not far from his mosque. Built to regulate the citizen’s relationship to religion and time, the Clock Tower signalled five daily prayers and synchronized the working hours of shop owners. Due to that, the stores opened and closed at the same time. The tower’s bell was designed for Jan Moldovan in 1764, an origin that can be easily traced from the inscription on the bell. The bell was brought by the Ottomans from their wars in Moldova and Vllah countries. In 2001, the bell and the clock’s mechanism were stolen, while in 2002, a digital clock was put in its place, of course, deviating far from its original appearance.
