Elektro Kosova/ Lepa Brena

Clad in white marble and shiny black glass, the Elektro Kosova building introduced new stylistic features to the city’s architecture. Designed by Zoran Zakić and Dragan Kovačević, it was inaugurated in 1984. Tall and everfresh as a beautiful pine tree, Pristina’s residents were quick to call it Lepa Brena, which in translation literally means “Beautiful Pine Tree.” Lepa Brena was a famous pop-folk singer in Yugoslavia and represented the Šumadija strand of folk. Tall and blond, she fulfilled the beauty standards of the time. Symbolizing country kitsch with nationalistic undertones, the nicknaming of the Elektro Kosova building Lepa Brena by residents of Pristina expressed a sense of humor and distaste for the times about to come.
