Characterized by popular rebellions against military and bureaucratic elites, the worldwide protests of 1968, encouraged Kosovo Albanians to articulate their political demands through protest. Enraged by the ongoing violence from the Serb-led administration, and the overall poor political and economic state of Kosovo in Yugoslavia, the outbreak was imminent. The first protest of Albanians in 1968 was organized in Prizren, demanding universities and recognition of Albanian as an official language, as well as equal rights with other Yugoslav people. The largest protest was in Pristina, where a protester was killed and many were wounded. On the fiftieth anniversary of the protest, a commemorative plaque was unveiled to pay tribute to protesters and Murat Mehmeti, the fallen.
