Kurrizi

Kurrizi, translated as “The Spine,” is an anatomical name that describes the design of high-rise apartment buildings followed by chains of shops stacked on top of one another, reminiscent of the spine, built in the ‘80s to accommodate the aspiring middle-class of Pristina. The design team was headed by Dražen Janković and Darko Kozjak and built by Ramiz Sadiku, a state-run construction company. While the political conditions that built Kurrizi deteriorated at the beginning of the ‘90s, the complex still managed to preserve its sense of freedom; it became a cultural hub of the de-institutionalized Albanian community. Though often raided by the Milosević regime’s police, for Albanian youth of the ‘90s, it always represented a safe space.
