The Kosovo Maiden

The statue of Kosovska Devojka, in English the Kosovo Maiden, takes its meaning from a Serbian epic poetry set in 1389. The statue of the maiden sitting with her eyes fixed downwards portrayed the lamentation for the fallen in the Battle of Kosovo. Placed in korzo  in beginning of the 1960s, the statue relates to the location through its form. Kosovska Devojka stood across the street from the hotel Kosovski Božur, which thematized the Battle of Kosovo of 1389 on its facade. It is interesting to note that to the youth, the statue represented a girl reading and is remembered as such. The current statue, that of Mother Teresa, has kept the contours of the initial design: the plinth and round fountain of the Kosovska Devojka.
