The Domanik’s House

Behind the Sultan Mehmet Fatih Mosque and to the right of the Clock Tower, you can see the facade of one of the few Ottoman houses, known as konak, still standing in the city. Built sometime in the 19th century, the konak belonged to the Domanik family, who immigrated to Turkey in the first half of the 20th century. Its oriel windows are built in the bindirme style commonly seen in central Anatolia. The wide eaves are strengthened by six pillars placed in corners, walls and even window jambs, which together with the windows placed on the garden wall, give an elegant look to the house. Having also been used as a meeting point for the local resistance against the Italian invasion during the Second World War, the old konak hosted the Kosovo Academy of Arts and Sciences for many years and today hosts the Society of Political Prisoners.
