The Long ‘90s

The revocation of Kosovo’s autonomy in 1989 was followed by the massive expulsion of Albanians from public institutions throughout 1990-91. A political crisis that was thought to be short-term lasted close to a decade and contributed to the alienation of the Albanian community from their own city. This exclusion brought about self-organized institutions and the creation of a cultural and political ecosystem that expressed itself as a non-violent resistance to Milosević’s regime. Homes and other privately owned facilities were used as schools, universities, hospitals, cultural spaces and media centers, spatially dislocating Albanians from the center to the periphery of the city. This walk is a tribute to that life.
