Lokaç Mosque

The Lokaç Mosque was built in between 1455-1551, and because it was located in a part of town that was covered in mud and dust, the townspeople used an expression, “Lokaç, tükür de kaç”, which in translation means, “Lokaç, spit and run.” Research suggests that Yusuf Efendi Kalioğlu built the mosque: in its yard, there used to be a Lokaç neighborhood spring, which served for the abdest before namaz prayers. Part of the mosque was also mektep, which had more than a hundred pupils. The mosque for a long time functioned with a half minaret, with the initiative of the Shyqri Begu and Islamic Association, the minaret was built in its entirety. The Mosque was demolished in 1954, in compliance with the urban master plan that envisioned the building of Kosovski Božur Hotel. Traces of the Lokaç Mosque’s fountain reappeared in 2012, and it stands as the only reminder of that time in this part of town.
