Train station

The first railway to Kosovo was built by an Ottoman company linking Thessaloniki to Mitrovica in 1873. The railway network then was extended by a Franco-British company between the years 1931 and 1936 during which the Pristina railway station was built. The structure represents the French architectural style of the time, which can also be seen throughout the Middle East and all the way to India, where  French railway companies constructed railways. The Pristina train station saw scenes of mass migration by the Turkish and Albanian communities of the city to Turkey from 1945 to the 1960s. It was run by the Yugoslav Railways until 1992 and later was taken over by Serbian Railways until 1999. In  March of that same year, Milošević’s troops deported Albanian citizens to Elez Han. Even though the network is now managed by the Republic of Kosovo and operates intra-country connections and one international connection to Skopje, the northern part is still under the control of Serbian Railways and connects to the rest of the network in Serbia.
