Çarshi Mosque Shatërvan

During the Ottoman Empire, Pristina’s public space had over forty drinking fountains. Referred to as shatërvan, over time they were demolished and what survived is the fountain between the Çarshi Mosque and Museum of Kosovo. Built at the turn of the 18th century, this shatërvan is considered to be one of the oldest. The octagonal design consists of marble panels decorated with rosettes and other plant motives, in miniature exemplifies Ottoman architecture. Beside its utilitarian purpose, the shatërvans had an importance for abdest purification ritual.
