Between the Faculty of Philosophy and the National Library, architect Mileta Bojović designed the complex called “Youth Park” in 1996. The center of it became the tall bronze statue of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, a Montenegrin poet and philosopher, sculpted by Pavle Pejović, today a member of Montenegro’s Academy and Art and Science. Realist in style, the statue was nationalistically charged; pointing his finger towards the ground, Njegoš symbolically claimed the ownership of the land. Considered a symbol of repression, the statue had a short lifespan and was torn down on July 2, 1999 during a massive Albanian rally.
