The NATO bombings of Yugoslavia in 1999 were followed by massive deportation of Kosovo Albanians to North Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro. A handful of Pristina residents remained in their homes, and they of one mind tell the story when NATO troops entered the city on June 12, 1999 signifying the end of the war. The sound of tanks and the sight of friendly uniforms gave the citizens courage to leave their basements and go out into the city squares again. On the anniversary of Pristina’s liberation in 2018, a plaque was inaugurated to commemorate 157 fallen NATO peacekeepers in Kosovo. This memorial was built to honor NATO and each of the countries that contributed to maintain peace in Kosovo for almost two decades now.
