Albanological Institute

Founded in 1953, the Albanological Institute moved to the University Campus in 1977 and was the last public institution to be shut down for Albanians. At the beginning of 1990, the Institute supported the Reconciliation of Blood Feuds Campaign, a nationwide movement initiated by students and former political prisoners. Anton Çetta and Zekeria Cana, both scholars of the Institute familiar with the oda communication style, supported the mediation process case by case. The closure of the Institute in 1994 was followed by indescribable violence. Nonetheless, the annual academic journal, Gjurmime Albanologjike [Albanian Studies] published since 1971, continued its work under austere conditions without funds and infrastructure. Upon the mediation of the Catholic association St. Egidio, an agreement was reached between Albanian political representatives and the Milosević regime. As a result, the Albanological Institute returned to its facilities in 1998.
