Satellites

The shutting down of all Albanian-language media institutions in 1990-1991 pushed to the surface an urgent need for information beyond the three Serbian TV channels which were bias in their reporting. In response, Albanian households, later followed by other communities, began to install satellite dishes, which locally were known as “mushrooms” because of the speed with which they took over the city. Apart from gaining access to international media, for the first time, the forbidden Albanian Radio and Television (RTSH) could be watched as well. In particular, the two-hour weekly program about Kosovo provided information concerning the political situation in the country. The satellite dishes are not in use today, but one can still see them occasionally hanging as a reminder of a time when they were the only window on the world.
